About
Development of EUFGIS
The information system was developed in the EUFGIS project (Establishment of a European Information System on Forest Genetic Resources, April 2007-March 2011) in close collaboration with the European Forest Genetic Resources Programme (EUFORGEN) and its member countries. The EUFGIS project was co-funded by the European Commission through the Council Regulation (EC No 870/2004) on genetic resources in agriculture. In addition to the national focal points, a large group of experts and scientists contributed to the development of the information system.
EUFGIS has been further developed in FORGENIUS H2020 project, funded by the EU by designing a totally new interface and adopting new technologies to run the information system and associated services. FORGENIUS also generates new data and ecological, climatic, genetic and phenotypic descriptors on GCUs.
The expanded EUFGIS is a new tool for national authorities responsible for the management of the network of Genetic Conservation Units (GCUs) in each country, as well as for the wider conservation community, allowing predictions of the fate of European forests in the short, medium, and long term. Such a tool will be the key to invent new, adaptive strategies to preserve these extraordinary natural assets at the continental level.
